(Sorry, I couldn’t find a good drawing of Gervais - but this picture is artistic enough in itself.)
Our last atheist comedian is Ricky Gervais, English comedian, actor, director, radio presenter, producer, musican and writer, likely best known for his role on The Office.
“Wow. No God. If Mum had lied to me about God, had she also lied to me about Santa? yes, but who cares? The gifts kep coming. And so did the gifts of my newfound atheism. The gifts of truth, science, nature. The real beauty of this world. Not a world by design, but one by chance. I learned of evolution—a theory so simple and obvious that only England’s greatest genius could have come up with it. Evolution of plants, animals, and us—with imagination, free will, love and humor. I no longer needed a reason for my existence, just a reason to live. And imagination, free will, love, humor, fun, music, sports, beer, and pizza are all good enough reasons for living.
But living an honest life—for that you need the truth. That’s the other thing I learned that day, that the truth, however shocking or uncomfortable, in the end leads to liberation and dignity.” (From his February 2008 essay in Bestlife Magazine)

In the sake of gender equity (and because I find her hilarious), our next atheist comedian is Kathy Griffin, American comedian, actress, television personality, author and LGBT rights activist.
“My parents sent me to Catholic school, which only made me the vehement militant atheist that I am today.”

This Friday’s theme is atheist comedians!
Our first atheist (I think actually agnostic, but…well you know) comedian is Lewis Black, comedian, author, playwright, social critic and actor.
“Many Americans reaffirmed their faith this year.
I didn’t, because I have no faith.
I was born and raised Jewish and it just didn’t take.
You see, when I was a kid, my parents on the first Hanukkah gave me a top to play with. They call it a dreidel, but I know a top when I see one. And as I looked down at what is truly the dumbest toy ever created in the history of civilization, I thought, you know, I’m not gonna be Jewish for long.”
